CDP for Control Panel - Overview

Web hosting providers are challenged to grow in what may be the most competitive market for Internet services today.

  • Web Hosting is a Commodity - There is little to differentiate one hosting provider from another.  Hosts are in need of new services that add value to their hosting with minimal investment.

Competitive Pricing – Web Hosts are constantly challenged to keep their prices competitive.  Most hosting companies can not afford to spend time restoring the deleted files for a single web site without charging expensive “restore” fees, which customers are not often willing to pay.

Lack of Central or Physical Control – often web servers are located in remote sites or data centers where physical access to the server or tape drives are not available.  In the dedicated server environment most users only have the option to restore the operating system and start from scratch.

High Customer Density – Hosts sometimes fit hundreds of customers and web sites on a single computer.  Each customer must have their own access control and security policy, protecting their actions from other customers while giving them as much control as possible.

For lack of a good backup solution some administrators have turned to copying data between servers, or keeping second hard disks where copies of their data are stored.  People are forced to use shell scripts, ftp, or open source file copying software not intended to be used as a reliable backup.  Many users do not have backups.  As a result, people spend too much time either restoring data or re-creating data from scratch.

Human error – Everyone makes mistakes, accidental data deletion is the most common cause of data loss.  These everyday occurrences still cause serious problems for users because data is often too difficult or expensive to restore.

Backup, Restore, and Disaster Recovery for Web Hosting

R1Soft backup for Control Panels has all of the features found in R1Soft Backup with special features added for web hosting providers.

Hosting customers have big expectations.  They expect the world from their hosting company for often only a few dollars a month.  They expect their site to be on a state-of-the-art main frame, in a state-of-the-art triple redundant data center, guarded by armed mercenaries and watch dogs, monitored day and night by on-site network engineers with a hundred years of experience!

O.K. we may be exaggerating a little, but all of those in the hosting business know the stakes are high and another thing customers expect is data integrity.  They need frequent incremental backups protecting their data.  They also need to be able to get at that data, day or night without any help from the service provider.  They may need to restore their whole site, or maybe just restore that one all important file they deleted.
